Smart Directions for HERE Maps/ Nokia

My role
Senior Interaction Designer for Smart Directions
The challenge
Re-designing Here Maps from scratch. In this context, I focussed on Smart Directions and aligned with other project streams and the research department to make sure we created a holistic user experience. Nokia back then was about to abandon its brands Nokia Maps and Ovi Maps and to shape what later on became HERE Maps. We re-designed HERE Maps several times but finally created a stable design environment which is still online today even though HERE is not part of Nokia anymore and currently co-owned by Daimler, BMW and Intel. Part of this re-design was the question of how we could develop a route planner that always will provide the best route, based on weather, preferences, distance, mode of transport, landmarks while sightseeing, etc.
The solution
Part of this re-design was an initiative called “Smart Directions”, something which today would be called an AI based route-planner.

The MVP
As a first MVP we created a design which would allow you to choose from several modes of transport and it would highlight the best mode.

What went live
Ultimately we released an even simpler solution (or should I say, rather more reduced as an MVP of the MVP). This design however was aligned with the overall re-design efforts of 70 people and allowed us to release a new design framework in time.

Process
Below you can find some random screenshots of explorations and wireframes I created or worked on.

The route planner was initially web-based but already in this phase, I spent a lot of time concepting on how we could use it as a bridge to mobile.
